Three verdicts, one scale
Every app we test is scored out of 100 on privacy, security, behaviour, honesty and its publisher, and lands in one of these. A serious finding overrides the score. How the scoring works.
Shady
Scored under 50
Behaves in ways that harm you or contradict what the publisher says. Any critical finding lands here, whatever the score.
Caution
Scored 50 to 74
Does what it says, but has problems worth knowing before you install. Any high finding lands here.
Safe
Scored 75 to 100
No meaningful privacy or security problems in the version we tested, and no high findings.

We install it on a clean machine, record every connection it makes, read its code, hold its privacy policy against what we saw, and give the publisher 14 days to reply before we publish.
